ChatGPT for tax research: how it compares with Nylon
ChatGPT is OpenAI’s general-purpose assistant: it searches the web, reads files, runs deep research and has a free tier. Many accountants and tax advisers already ask it tax questions. Before you rely on it, look at four things: what its answers are based on, how you’d check them, what happens to client information you type in, and the cost. This page sets ChatGPT against Nylon on each, shows how to run them together, and says when ChatGPT on its own is the right call.
ChatGPT vs Nylon in five rows
Facts as at 24 October 2026. Nylon’s prices are marked A$, NZ$ or £ and exclude GST or VAT. ChatGPT’s are OpenAI’s US list prices before tax, and OpenAI says it localises some prices. Sources are further down the page.

Pick Nylon when a tax answer has to trace back to legislation, revenue authority guidance or a decision. Pick ChatGPT when you mostly need a general assistant for writing and day-to-day tasks. Or combine them: an Adviser or Elite seat lets ChatGPT call Nylon’s research through the connector, if your ChatGPT plan allows connectors.

Where Nylon differs from ChatGPT on tax questions
As at 24 October 2026. ChatGPT is fast, covers everything and drafts well. Nylon is narrower on purpose: tax answers you can follow back to the law, available inside ChatGPT as well.
Grounded in three countries’ primary sources
Nylon answers from Australian, New Zealand and UK tax legislation and revenue authority guidance, plus Australian and New Zealand case law and UK tax decisions, and links each citation to its source. ChatGPT relies on its training and, if it searches, the web. OpenAI’s help centre says its search results and citations “can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect”.
Tested on CPA Program tax questions
Nylon’s October 2026 benchmark used 91 Australian tax questions from the CPA Program. Nylon scored 4.68 out of 5 and OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra 4.28. GPT-6 Astra ran through OpenAI’s API with the benchmark’s shared web-search tool, not through the ChatGPT app, and had a cap of 20 tool calls per question; the Claude and Gemini models had none.
Your chats stay out of training
Nothing you type into Nylon is used to train AI models, whatever your plan. OpenAI may train on chats from ChatGPT’s Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans unless you switch off “Improve the model for everyone”. Business and Enterprise workspaces are excluded from training by default.
Use both together
An Adviser or Elite seat includes Nylon’s AI connector for ChatGPT, which lets ChatGPT search Nylon’s library and cite what it finds. Whether you can add it depends on your ChatGPT plan and workspace settings.

ChatGPT for tax research: common questions
Questions about using Nylon with ChatGPT? Book a demo or email support@usenylon.com.
Can I use ChatGPT for tax research?
For getting your bearings and first drafts, yes, as long as you verify what it says and keep client information confidential. As at 24 October 2026, OpenAI’s terms say not to rely on its output “as a sole source of truth or factual information, or as a substitute for professional advice”. With any AI, Nylon included, the advice stays your responsibility. Australia’s Tax Practitioners Board, for one, says in its AI guidance (TPB(GS) 55/2026, July 2026) that AI “cannot be relied on as a replacement for tax knowledge, experience or expertise”. Nylon links each answer to the legislation, guidance or decision behind it, so you can check the source yourself.
Is ChatGPT accurate for tax questions?
OpenAI says ChatGPT “can make mistakes”, and no AI tool gets everything right, Nylon included. Nylon’s October 2026 benchmark put 91 CPA Program Australia Taxation questions to six systems between 28 September and 1 October 2026: OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra scored 4.28 out of 5 and GPT-6 Sol 3.96, and Nylon 4.68. Both OpenAI models ran through its API rather than the ChatGPT app, with the benchmark’s shared web-search tool and no system prompt, and both had a limit of 20 tool calls per question that the Claude and Gemini models didn’t. GPT-6 Sol reached the limit on 52 of the 91 questions and GPT-6 Astra on 7, so their scores may understate them, and results in ChatGPT may differ. As at 24 October 2026, OpenAI says GPT-6, powered by GPT-6 Sol, is rolling out as the default in ChatGPT’s Chat for eligible Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users, with GPT-6 Astra behind its GPT-6 Pro option.
What is the best alternative to ChatGPT for tax research?
If you need answers cited to Australian, New Zealand or UK primary sources, Nylon: it links each answer to the legislation, guidance or decision, never trains AI models on your inputs, and runs inside ChatGPT with an Adviser or Elite seat where your ChatGPT plan allows. If your team relies on publisher commentary and practical tools, CCH iKnowConnect or Thomson Reuters Checkpoint. For legal research, Lexis+ with Protégé. For Australian advice drafting workflows at a flat firm price, Elfworks.
Does ChatGPT use my clients’ data to train its models?
That depends on your plan. As at 24 October 2026, OpenAI says it may train its models on content from the individual plans (Free, Go, Plus and Pro) unless you switch off “Improve the model for everyone” in Data controls or use a Temporary Chat. By default it doesn’t train on Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace content. Nylon never trains AI models on your inputs, whatever the plan.
How does ChatGPT pricing compare with Nylon?
As at 24 October 2026, OpenAI lists ChatGPT Plus at US$20 a month and Pro from US$100 a month, and Business Standard at US$25 per user a month, or US$20 billed annually, with at least 2 seats. Those are US prices before tax, and OpenAI says they may differ by country; there’s also a free tier. Nylon is 39, 99 or 199 per user a month in A$, NZ$ or £, before GST or VAT, billed monthly. Keep ChatGPT and add Nylon, and you pay for both.
Can I try Nylon before I buy?
Book a demo and watch Nylon answer questions from your own work. Plans are monthly, and you can cancel whenever you like. ChatGPT has a free tier.
Does Nylon work inside ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot?
Yes, with an Adviser or Elite seat, as long as your assistant’s plan and workspace settings allow connectors. Through Nylon’s AI connector, those assistants search Nylon’s library and cite the source.
Can a firm trust Nylon with client work?
Nylon has SOC 2 Type I and Type II reports and ISO 27001 and ISO 42001 certification. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and your inputs never train AI models.

Apart from Nylon’s own benchmark, information about ChatGPT and the other products comes from their own websites as at 24 October 2026 and can change. Nylon isn’t affiliated with or endorsed by OpenAI or any of those owners. Nylon’s October 2026 benchmark ran OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6 Sol through OpenAI’s API, not the ChatGPT app, with a limit of 20 tool calls per question that the Claude and Gemini models didn’t have, and didn’t test the other products on this page.
